Our History

A Legacy of Dedication Since 1941

Schmitty & Sons’ story began in 1941 when Wilfrid “Schmitty” Schmitt started driving for the Orchard Lake Co-Op, a local transit company in Lakeville, Minnesota. By 1952, Schmitty had purchased his own bus and commenced transporting children for Lakeville Schools. This humble beginning laid the foundation for a tradition of excellence that has propelled the company’s growth over the decades.

Growth and Diversification

Starting as a single-bus operation, Schmitty & Sons has expanded its fleet to over 300 vehicles, including school buses, mid-coaches, and motorcoaches. This growth has enabled the company to diversify its services, encompassing charter operations and public transit. In 2000, Schmitty & Sons acquired the rights to the Gray Line Tours franchise for Minnesota, further broadening its service offerings. With over 20 years in the public transit sector, the company continues to play a vital role in connecting communities.

Expanding Services

Beyond transportation, Schmitty & Sons has established a state-of-the-art repair and maintenance facility. Staffed by experienced mechanics and body repair experts, this facility ensures the fleet remains in top condition, reflecting the company’s commitment to safety and reliability.

Embracing Employee Ownership

On January 1, 2016, owners Danny and Sue Schmitt transitioned Schmitty & Sons into an employee-owned enterprise. Recognizing that the company’s success is driven by its dedicated staff, this move empowers employees by giving them a stake in the company’s future. Both Danny and Sue continue to serve on the board of directors, guiding the company with the same passion and dedication that has defined its history.
